The Frogs!
My nephew Trey had learned about Frogs in science class and decided he wanted some dart frogs. I did some research into these little guys and found out they are easier to keep then snakes. I had some left over items from a bar I had built, glass, wood, ect and would only have to buy very few items for vivarium builds. I had Trey do the research in the plants we would need so it would be a learning experince for him. I am pretty pleased how it came out. Here are some pics of the process:
So it was finished, the build. Now to get it ready for the little guys. That was the hard part. I was recording the temps and humidity for 2 months (overkill because I'm mental) to get a feel for the ranges. Since I have a water side, each breeder I met with locally told me to focus on temps rather than humidity since frogs will naturally find the wet spots and take a dip if they are feeling dehydrated. They also suggested that I have so many 'under' spots (under the leaves of bigger plants, etc) that humidity is sort of a non-issue.
I knew I was going to be home Tuesday and Trey was home so we decided to order the frogs. They come Fedx over night. So 3 juvenile dendrobates auratus arrived yesterday morning. Bonkers how they ship, the frogs were individually packed in a plastic condiment container with a lid and a wad of sphagnum moss inside a styro shipper with some cool packs. At first I couldn't see 2 of them as they burrowed into the wad, but the one was right on the bottom.
First reaction, they are fucking tiny, like fit completely on a dime tiny. None were moving so I was dreading having to call the place I bought from, but it was probably a factor of being cold and popping out into the light from a dark box. Either way, the one started moving and the others moved a leg or two to hide better. I opened the containers in the vivarium and pulled out the moss. Once they realized some big fucker was getting close they all bolted under the leaf litter or into the plants so I figured we probably won't see them again for weeks if ever or until they get comfortable or maybe never again.
Then last night this happened. Two of them came out of hiding!:
Frogs are nice and was a huge selling point because they don't have the steep heating requirements like snakes do. Plus, feeding is not that big a chore, but it is more of an active process. The eat fruit flies. Fruit flies need to be cultured every 10-12 days. I am using 32oz Mason jars with coffee filters on the top. Start a culture with a tap from the old culture and you'll have new flies in 7-10 days. Cultures are good for 25-28 days.

Just a tip when you go to make a journal.
"Say it; forget it, write it; regret it."
We are now in the digital age, and once something is written or posted there is no going back. Even if you delete it after you post we all now once it's on the internet it is out there forever. Make sure you have no regets. My journal consit of almost 7 years of post. I rarely delete anything after I post it. The only time I do is when I have not been nice and later had regrets. Yet as the saying go I am trying hard to rid myself of regrets. So now before I hit the post option I stop, think, ask myself will I regret this later. I am human so I will make my mistakes but I am trying to be a better person thanks to my CM Mogy and his teachings.
Live your best life people!
